Application to trademark the surname of Ahmet Minguzzi rejected

The Turkish Patent and Trademark Office (TÜRKPATENT) has rejected a trademark application filed under the name "Minguzzi." The office stated that the application was found unsuitable due to "other intellectual property rights or personal rights" and "bad faith." The objection filed by the family of Mattia Ahmet Minguzzi was the deciding factor in the rejection of the application.

OBJECTION HIGHLIGHTED BAD FAITH AND VIOLATION OF PERSONAL RIGHTS

Following the death of Mattia Ahmet Minguzzi in a knife attack in 2025, a trademark application under the name "Minguzzi" was filed on April 11, 2025, by an individual claiming rights to the name. The application covered a wide range of categories, from leather and textile products to online marketplace services.

The attorney for Andrea Minguzzi, the father of Mattia Ahmet Minguzzi, filed an objection to the application based on the Industrial Property Law, citing "prior use," "other intellectual property rights or personal rights," and "bad faith." As a result of the objection, TÜRKPATENT rejected the application on two main grounds.
