Approaching the end for the expected law: A new era in military service for expatriates

Work is underway on a new legal regulation concerning Turkish citizens living abroad.

According to Haber Global, the prepared regulation aims to prevent dual citizens who have completed their mandatory military service in the country where they reside from having to fulfill the same obligation again in Turkey.

SCOPE OF MILITARY SERVICE TO BE EXPANDED

Under current practice, military service completed abroad can be considered valid in Turkey within the scope of bilateral agreements Turkey has signed with certain countries. With the new regulation being prepared, it is planned to expand the scope of this practice and resolve the uncertainties experienced regarding the military service obligations of dual citizens.

PENSION DEDUCTIONS MAY BE REMOVED FROM THE AGENDA

The regulatory package also includes changes regarding the pension system. Accordingly, it is envisioned that the practice of cutting the pensions of citizens who retired through foreign service debt payments if they work in Turkey will be ended. Thus, it is aimed for those who retired under this scope to benefit from the same rights as other retirees in Turkey.

REGULATION EXPECTED TO BE SUBMITTED TO PARLIAMENT BY THE END OF THE YEAR

AKP Chairman and President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan had also previously stated in his remarks regarding Turkish citizens living abroad that work was being carried out on the mutual recognition of military service and that necessary steps would be taken to solve the problems faced by expatriates. The regulation, for which preparations are ongoing, is expected to be submitted to the Grand National Assembly of Turkey by the end of the year.
