Armed attack in Ümraniye: 1 police officer martyred

In Ümraniye, a suspect apprehended during an operation by the Dudullu Police Station teams seized a police officer's weapon and opened fire. As a result of the ensuing struggle, one police officer was martyred, while another officer and the suspect's mother were injured.

ATTACK BEGAN DURING OPERATION

The incident occurred on September 22, 2024, at approximately 22:55, on Petrol Yolu Street in the Ihlamurkuyu neighborhood of Ümraniye.

Y.E.Ç. (19), who was wanted for "motorcycle theft" and had previously escaped, was apprehended by the Ümraniye District Police Department teams. Y.E.Ç., who has a criminal record of 26 offenses, resisted the police during his arrest and seized a police officer's weapon during the struggle.

Having obtained the weapon, Y.E.Ç. opened fire indiscriminately, attacking both police officers and citizens. As a result of the gunfire, police officers Ş.Y. (27) and K.H.S., as well as the suspect's mother P.G. (43), were injured.

POLICE OFFICER MARTYRED

The injured were quickly taken to the hospital by medical teams arriving at the scene. However, police officer Ş.Y. could not be saved despite all interventions at the hospital and was martyred. The treatment of the other injured individuals continues at the hospital.

The suspect, Y.E.Ç., who fled after the attack, was apprehended and taken into custody on a street following meticulous work by the police. Police teams, who took security measures at the scene, collected empty shell casings and conducted a forensic examination.

STATEMENT FROM THE ISTANBUL POLICE DEPARTMENT

A statement was issued by the Istanbul Police Department regarding the tragic incident. The statement included the following:

"During the efforts to apprehend a suspect who was caught and had escaped for 'motorcycle theft' by the Dudullu Police Station of the Ümraniye District Police Department on 22.09.2024, the individual named Y.E.Ç. (19), who has 26 criminal records for various offenses, seized the duty officer's weapon and fired at the officers and individuals in the vicinity. Our female police officer named Ş.Y. (27) could not be saved despite all interventions and was martyred. The treatment of police officer K.H.S. and the individual named P.G. continues in the hospital. The suspect Y.E.Ç. has been taken into custody wounded, and investigation proceedings have been initiated for the crimes of 'intentional killing-intentional injury.' We wish God's mercy upon our martyr, condolences to her grieving family and our Police Organization, and a speedy recovery to our injured officers."

LARGE-SCALE INVESTIGATION LAUNCHED

While a large-scale investigation was launched following the attack, the evidence collected at the scene has been taken under examination.
