Arzu Çerkezoğlu reacts to detentions: 'Scenes from military coups are happening every day'
DİSK President Arzu Çerkezoğlu reacted to the wave of detentions that took place in the early morning hours. Çerkezoğlu stated, "Those who have been detained are people who do not hesitate to speak their minds or act on what they say, who are not running away anywhere, and who defend their thoughts and actions everywhere."
A large number of politicians and journalists were detained in house raids carried out in 10 provinces, centered in Istanbul, in the early hours of the morning. DİSK President Arzu Çerkezoğlu reacted to the detentions. Çerkezoğlu said, "Scenes similar to those we experienced in the past during military coup days are now happening every day."
In a written statement issued on behalf of the DİSK Executive Board and signed by President Arzu Çerkezoğlu, the following statements were included:
"The fact that they were detained by raiding their homes instead of being summoned to the prosecutor's office to give statements shows that this process is not a legal one. The purpose of this method, which has been used frequently lately, is to portray those who object to them and those who oppose them as criminals, to terrorize, intimidate, and frighten them. These unlawful acts must be ended, and everyone who has been detained must be released immediately. The government, which loses more social support every day with its unjust policies that make the rich richer and the poor poorer, is trying to design politics with the stick of the judiciary in order to survive. Anyone who is not on their side and who voices the troubles of workers, laborers, retirees, that is, the people, is being detained and arrested by inventing a pretext. Scenes similar to those we experienced in the past during military coup days are now happening every day. Turkey is being moved further away from the basic principles of democracy and the republic every day. To stop this trend, for democracy, for the republic, it is urgent to stand shoulder to shoulder. We remind those who try to protect their seats not by listening to the wishes and aspirations of the people, but by designing politics through the judiciary and trying to silence social opposition, once again: There is no power greater than the people."
