Assailants who attacked Menderes Deputy Mayor in his office arrested
The assailants who assaulted Menderes Deputy Mayor Rüzgar Sönmez in his office in İzmir have been arrested and sent to prison.
Two assailants who assaulted İzmir Menderes Deputy Mayor Rüzgar Sönmez in his office around noon yesterday have been arrested and sent to prison.
According to allegations, Y.T. and those accompanying him came to the municipality for a license application and held a meeting with Deputy Mayor Rüzgar Sönmez in his office. Following an argument that broke out, H.K., who was with Y.T., punched Sönmez.
Upon notification, police teams were dispatched to the municipality, and the injured Sönmez was transferred to Gaziemir State Hospital.
In a statement regarding the incident, the İzmir Governor's Office stated that police teams arrived at the scene quickly after receiving a report of assault at the Menderes Municipality at approximately 12:30 PM. It was noted that H.K., who allegedly punched Sönmez, was taken into custody and that the investigation is ongoing.
It was learned that Yakup T. and his cousin Halil K. stated in their police testimonies, "They called us for a license application, and we went for the meeting. Afterward, we were taken into custody by the police on charges of assault. However, we did not attack anyone." The two assailants were arrested after being referred to the courthouse following their processing.
It was reported that Sönmez suffered an 80 percent loss of vision in one eye as a result of the assault.
