Attention those buying cigarettes with credit cards! Sanctions for extra fees

The Confederation of Turkish Tradesmen and Craftsmen (TESK) has taken action following complaints that some businesses have recently been demanding extra fees from customers paying for cigarette purchases with credit cards. Stating that this situation victimizes citizens and leads to unfair competition among tradesmen, TESK has issued a circular on the matter.

MINISTRIES: DEMANDING FEES IS AGAINST THE LAW

In the circular issued based on official statements following TESK's application to the Ministry of Trade and the Ministry of Treasury and Finance, it was clearly stated that businesses cannot demand additional commissions or service fees for credit card usage.

The circular reminded that if such a practice is detected, the business's agreement with the bank will be terminated and it will be unable to enter into a new contract for one year.

According to the circular, since a special tax base application is valid for the sale of tobacco products, it is not possible to add a “service fee” to the prices of these products. However, it was stated that in the event that an additional service is provided, VAT must be calculated and declared on the documents to be issued for this service.
