Attorney Turan Karakaş laid to rest

Attorney Turan Karakaş, who served as a lawyer for Republican figures during the Ergenekon conspiracy trials, a former member of the Cumhuriyet Foundation Board of Directors, and a 12punto columnist, has passed away at the age of 77.

Karakaş had been receiving treatment for cancer for some time.

A funeral ceremony was held for Turan Karakaş at the İzmir Narlıdere Cemevi.

His loved ones did not leave Karakaş alone on his final journey.

The funeral was attended by former İzmir Metropolitan Mayor and former Minister of Youth and Sports Yüksel Çakmur, CHP 22nd and 23rd Term İzmir Deputy Bülent Baratalı, CHP 24th, 25th, and 26th Term İzmir Deputy Musa Çam, CHP 24th, 25th, and 26th Term Muğla Deputy Nurettin Demir, former İzmir Metropolitan Mayor Aziz Kocaoğlu, and Istanbul Planning Agency President Buğra Gökce.

Turan Karakaş was laid to rest in the Bademler Village cemetery.

WHO IS ATTORNEY TURAN KARAKAŞ?

Born in 1947, Turan Karakaş graduated from Ankara University Faculty of Law.

In his final interview with 12punto, Attorney Turan Karakaş described himself by saying, "We were a group of students who loved Uğur Mumcu very much. It was as if we had a kinship dating back many years. In those years, the source of our love and respect for Uğur Mumcu stemmed from our ideological camaraderie. We listened to the lectures and conferences of Ahmet Taner Kışlalı, Tarık Zafer Tunaya, Mümtaz Soysal, Prof. Dr. Server Tanilli, Atilla İlhan, and many other intellectuals and professors who were his comrades, and we read their books. We tried to learn something and improve ourselves."

Attorney Turan Karakaş, who also served as the CHP İzmir Provincial Chairman, was a Vatan Party İzmir 1st District parliamentary candidate.

Karakaş also served as the Chief Legal Counsel for the Ministry of Culture.

Attorney Turan Karakaş, who was a close friend of the assassinated Necip Hablemitoğlu, former Minister of Culture and Tourism and Cumhuriyet columnist Ahmet Taner Kışlalı, and Uğur Mumcu, is the author of several children's books.
