Autopsy footage of Münevver Karabulut's killer Cem Garipoğlu emerges

The brutal murder of 17-year-old high school student Münevver Karabulut by her boyfriend Cem Garipoğlu in Istanbul's Bahçeşehir district on March 3, 2009, shook Turkey.

Garipoğlu, who was sentenced to 24 years in prison, committed suicide in 2014 in the single-person cell where he was being held at Silivri Prison. However, claims that the person who died was not Cem Garipoğlu have persisted in the public eye for years.

The Karabulut family requested that Cem Garipoğlu's grave be opened (exhumation) to put an end to the controversy. However, both the prosecutor's office and the Ministry of Justice rejected the request. Most recently, Cem Garipoğlu's father, Hayyam Garipoğlu, also applied to the prosecutor's office, requesting that the grave be opened and that the public put an end to this debate.

VIDEO AND PHOTOGRAPHS REQUESTED

The Silivri Chief Public Prosecutor's Office, which is conducting the investigation, requested the photographs and videos taken during the procedures performed during Cem Garipoğlu's autopsy from the Council of Forensic Medicine. The autopsy video and photographs received by the prosecutor's office were handed over to an expert for examination.

The expert examined the video recordings and photographs of the autopsy procedure performed on November 12, 2014. The expert prepared a report by transcribing the photographs and videos and submitted it to the investigation file. A copy of the expert report was also provided to the Karabulut family.

FACE IS VISIBLE!

According to the report by Mustafa Sait Özkan from Sabah; Garipoğlu's autopsy footage has been accessed. In the footage, Garipoğlu's face is clearly visible, while bruising on the fingers of his right and left hands also drew attention.

The Karabulut family, through their lawyer Dr. Rezan Epözdemir, reiterated their demand for an exhumation of Garipoğlu's grave.

They requested that if it is determined that the body in the grave does not belong to Garipoğlu, a public lawsuit be filed against the law enforcement officers who carried out the autopsy procedures and conducted the murder investigation, as well as the judicial officials involved in the trial phase.

The petition sent to the prosecutor's office also listed the deficiencies experienced in the investigation conducted immediately after the murder one by one. The decision to be made by the prosecutor's office regarding whether or not to open the grave will resolve the impasse.
