AYM claim from Turkish sources speaking to Reuters! ‘Erdoğan and his allies…’

According to a senior official and two AKP members of parliament who spoke to the British-based news agency Reuters, the Erdoğan government is seeking ways to curb the influence of the Constitutional Court (AYM) following its ruling on rights violations and the release of imprisoned TİP Hatay MP Can Atalay.

According to the sources who spoke to Reuters, Erdoğan and his allies are uncomfortable with the powers held by the AYM. The sources reported that one of the main factors for this discomfort is the widespread use of "individual applications."

A senior Turkish official claimed that the AYM has been able to create a "unique sphere of power" through the decisions it makes on individual applications.

Erdoğan's office and the Ministry of Justice did not comment on the matter.

According to official data, since September 2012, the AYM has processed 500 thousand applications filed by citizens alleging violations of their fundamental rights and has reached a verdict in 484 thousand cases.
