Ayşe Barım referred to the Council of Forensic Medicine: 'I am at risk of death in prison'

Talent manager Ayşe Barım, who is being held in custody as part of the Gezi Park protests investigation on charges of "aiding in the attempt to overthrow the Government of the Republic of Turkey," has been referred to the Council of Forensic Medicine for an evaluation of her health status following an application by her lawyers. The referral took place on Wednesday, July 17.

Her lawyer, Deniz Ketenci, emphasized in a statement that her client's life is under serious threat due to prison conditions given her severe health issues, stating, "We have requested her release because her health condition is deteriorating day by day."

The official medical report obtained from Başakşehir Çam and Sakura City Hospital, which was submitted to the case file by Ayşe Barım's lawyers, states that Barım has six separate heart conditions and also carries a high risk of death due to a brain aneurysm. The report clearly demonstrated that the risk to her life would increase if her detention continues.

SHE HAD DESCRIBED HER HEALTH CONDITION AT THE HEARING

Barım had drawn attention to her health condition at her first hearing held on July 7. She had stated, "I have been held in custody for 162 days. I have a brain aneurysm and six separate heart conditions. I am struggling in unhealthy conditions." Despite this, the court panel had decided to continue her detention.

Barım is being tried as part of the investigation into the Gezi Park events on charges of "aiding in the attempt to overthrow the Government of the Republic of Turkey or to prevent it from performing its duties by using force and violence." Numerous other individuals are also defendants in the same file on similar charges.

ALL EYES ON THE FORENSIC MEDICINE REPORT

The report to be prepared by the Council of Forensic Medicine in the coming days will be decisive in the final decision regarding whether Barım can remain in prison.

WHAT HAD HAPPENED?

Ayşe Barım, against whom an investigation was launched by the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office following allegations in written and visual media that she participated in the Gezi Park protests in Taksim, was arrested on January 27 on the allegation of "aiding in the attempt to overthrow the Government of the Republic of Turkey or to prevent it from performing its duties."

The investigation included claims in the content of a wiretap regarding a conversation Memet Ali Alabora had with another person, alleging that an exchange of ideas took place regarding the publication of a declaration with artists for Gezi Park and that this was put into practice.

It was stated that Barım had intense communication with Osman Kavala, Çiğdem Utku Mater, and Memet Ali Alabora, who are defendants in the Gezi Park trial, that she directed the artists she managed to participate in the Gezi Park events, and that she herself participated in the events with these actors.

An indictment was prepared against Barım seeking a prison sentence of 22 years and 6 months to 30 years for the crime of "aiding in the attempt to overthrow the Government of the Republic of Turkey or to partially or completely prevent it from performing its duties by using force and violence."
