Aytun Çıray's striking call to Özgür Özel: 'He should become CHP Chairman, this is what will excite the nation'

Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (İBB) Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu made remarks that dominated the agenda during a press conference he held yesterday (January 27). Explaining the misconduct of the expert witness involved in the investigations conducted against him and CHP-run municipalities, İmamoğlu stated, "The name of the radish in the bag has been revealed: S.B."

Following the press conference, an investigation was launched into İmamoğlu.

During the press conference in question, İmamoğlu deflected a question regarding his potential presidential candidacy to CHP Chairman Özgür Özel. As debates continue over the method of determining a candidate and the announcement calendar, the discussion surrounding İmamoğlu has intensified.

Former MP Aytun Çıray, who resigned from the İYİ Party, made a striking statement regarding the investigation launched against İmamoğlu and the debates over the presidential candidacy.

Emphasizing that the issue is political rather than legal, Çıray stated that İBB Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu should become the CHP Chairman.

"Mr. Özgür Özel is a former political colleague of mine. However, this is a national issue, and the CHP is Turkey's retaining wall," said Çıray, adding, "Furthermore... the idea that 'we will carry out a series of actions and eventually declare Mr. Ekrem the candidate, and the problem will be solved' is a fantasy. One can also go down in history by making sacrifices."

“There is no need to beat around the bush. People and party organizations in countries like ours are leader-focused. The image of co-chairmanship that has emerged, especially in @herkesicinCHP, is a weakness. Mr. @eczozgurozel is a former political colleague of mine. But this is a national issue, and the CHP is Turkey's retaining wall. Furthermore... the idea that 'we will carry out a series of actions and eventually declare Mr. Ekrem the candidate, and the problem will be solved' is a fantasy. As someone who has experienced politics since the struggle against bans, the solution is: for the CHP to pause its parliamentary activities, for Mr. @ekrem_imamoglu to become the CHP Chairman, and to embrace the nation square by square.
