Azerbaijan suspends flights to Russia

Azerbaijan Airlines (AZAL) has suspended flights to the Russian cities of Mineralnye Vody, Sochi, Volgograd, Ufa, Samara, Grozny, and Makhachkala until the investigation into the plane that crashed in Kazakhstan is completed.

In a statement released by AZAL, it was noted that these routes were temporarily closed, prioritizing flight safety and the preliminary results of the investigation into the safety of the flights in question.

On the other hand, flights to Moscow, St. Petersburg, Yekaterinburg, Astrakhan, Kazan, and Novosibirsk will continue in accordance with security measures.

WHAT HAPPENED?

An Embraer 190 type aircraft belonging to Azerbaijan Airlines, which was operating a flight from Baku to Grozny, crashed near the city of Aktau in Kazakhstan on December 25.

In the accident, 38 people lost their lives, and 29 people survived.

Speaking to AA, Azerbaijani officials confirmed the claim that the plane had been subjected to an attack by a Russian "Pantsir-S" air defense system.
