Azerbaijani President Aliyev dissolves the National Assembly

Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev has dissolved the National Assembly and decided that general elections will be held on September 1.

According to the decree published on the Azerbaijani Presidency's website, Aliyev dissolved the country's legislative body, the National Assembly.

The general elections, which were planned for November, will now be held on September 1.

The Azerbaijani National Assembly had previously appealed to President Ilham Aliyev to "dissolve the Assembly and move the general elections planned for November forward by two months" due to the country hosting the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change 29th Conference of the Parties (COP 29) from November 11 to 22.

President Aliyev had submitted the National Assembly's decision to the Constitutional Court to evaluate its compliance with the constitution. The Constitutional Court ruled that the dissolution of the National Assembly and the rescheduling of the general elections were in accordance with the constitution.
