Baby Sıla's aunt: 'We have no such degenerate sister'

Two-year-old baby Sıla, who lost her life after being subjected to sexual abuse and violence in the Malkara district of Tekirdağ, was laid to rest amidst tears.

After the burial, the baby's aunt, Aslı Tatar, told reporters who asked about her sister, Bakiye Yeniçeri, "She is not our sister. We have no sister. We have no such degenerate sister. Forget this family; there is no one like that in this entire lineage. She should get life imprisonment."

Aunt Tatar added, "Our pain is immense. May God not let anyone experience this. Those who haven't lived through it cannot know this pain. I wouldn't wish this on my worst enemy. I thank everyone who has stood by us."

'TO ENSURE SHE IS PUNISHED TO THE FULLEST EXTENT'

Lawyer Ahmet Berksoy stated the following in his remarks:

"We received the painful news yesterday afternoon. Since then, I believe there was a confidentiality order and a restriction on access to information documents within the scope of the file. Under the Code of Criminal Procedure, we were unable to access information and documents.

A total of 5 arrest measures were applied regarding baby Sıla. Two of the 5 people were minors. We can observe the strength of the grounds for restriction in the nature of this file. Based on the information we have obtained during the process, we can clearly and explicitly identify the sexual abuse of the child by the 2 minors. At this point, we will observe which actions of the other 3 adult suspects and perpetrators correspond to which acts under the Turkish Penal Code.

The relevant Chief Public Prosecutor's Office will determine the nature and classification of the crime. We are already following the process at this point. We will ensure they receive the heaviest sentence. The child was not showing any response up until this process. Despite intensive medical treatment while in the intensive care unit, some of her organs were being kept functioning with the help of machines and medication during this process.

However, she lost her life yesterday afternoon. In the event that a child enters a vegetative state as a result of sexual abuse and subsequently dies, the intent of the legislator is clear and explicit. It requires an aggravated life sentence. Even though there may be a discussion of age-based sentence reduction regarding minors, we will do our best legally to ensure they are punished to the maximum extent."
