An avocado-based suhoor suggestion made to citizens on a program broadcast on Diyanet TV has sparked backlash. Citizens, pointing to food prices, especially the price of Ramadan pita bread, commented on social media, asking, "What country do they live in?"
Avocado was included in the suhoor menu shared by the Diyanet.
Speaking on the program titled "How should one eat during Ramadan?" broadcast on Diyanet TV, dietitian Feride Şimşek Benli offered the following suggestions to citizens, saying, "If you like, you can add avocado":
"We especially desire for suhoor to be like breakfast. Let there be eggs, let there be a piece of cheese. If you like, you can add avocado. You can have a suhoor like this with 2-3 walnuts, 7-8 olives, 7-8 almonds, and plenty of greens. Or you can eat as a single meal. But since getting up for suhoor is a virtue, we definitely want you to get up. When you get up, you can spoon up a bowl of yogurt, drink your water, and go back to sleep. We break the fast with a glass of water, eat one date, and balance our blood sugar. Then we drink soup and take a break for prayer. If you eat a protein-rich diet, you will also prevent muscle loss."
'THE PEOPLE ARE HUNGRY, HUNGRY!'
The avocado suggestion from the Diyanet caused a reaction. Many users on social media expressed their frustration by reminding of the high cost of food prices. While one user stated, "Can we wrap the avocado, which costs between 50 and 70 liras each, in a pita bread that costs 30 liras and eat it?", another user commented, "What country do they live in? The people are hungry, hungry!!!"
