Bahçeli makes condolence call to TRNC Prime Minister Üstel

Bahçeli makes condolence call to TRNC Prime Minister Üstel

Following the capsizing and sinking of a passenger ship belonging to a private company off the coast of Kyrenia in the TRNC, MHP Chairman Devlet Bahçeli called TRNC Prime Minister Ünal Üstel by phone.

According to a statement made by MHP Deputy Chairman and Kayseri MP İsmail Özdemir on his social media account, the accident occurred on August 30, 2026, when the ship, which had departed from Kyrenia Port for Mersin Taşucu Port, capsized in the Mediterranean after moving approximately 4 miles away from the port.

While it was stated that there were 267 people on board the ship, according to initial information, 237 people were rescued. It was reported that 7 people lost their lives in the accident, and search and rescue efforts are continuing for the 23 people reported missing.

Özdemir stated that Turkey's relevant units are supporting the search and rescue efforts in coordination with TRNC authorities.

It was noted that during the call, Bahçeli conveyed his condolences and well wishes to Üstel, and expressed that Turkey is ready to provide all kinds of support for the ongoing efforts.
