In a written statement issued by the Governor's Office, it was stated, "The reports appearing in some media outlets today claiming that 'smallpox was detected at Bandırma Şehit Mehmet Günenç Anatolian High School and the school was closed' do not reflect the truth.

The disease that is the subject of the reports is not smallpox as alleged, but chickenpox, which is seen in childhood."

The statement, which noted that the claims regarding the school being closed are baseless, recorded that educational activities at the high school are continuing.
