Ban in Diyarbakır extended to 7 days

In a statement issued by the Diyarbakır Governor's Office, it was stated that the 4-day protest ban declared across the province between June 3 and 7, following the removal of Hakkari Mayor Mehmet Sıddık Akış from office by the Ministry of Interior and the appointment of Governor Ali Çelik as acting mayor in his place, has been extended until June 10. 

The statement read, “Following the removal of Hakkari Mayor Mehmet Sıddık Akış from office by the Ministry of Interior on June 3, 2024, and the appointment of Hakkari Governor Ali Çelik as the Acting Mayor of Hakkari, it is assessed that terrorist organization sympathizers, marginal and radical groups may attempt to carry out illegal actions and activities across our province under the pretext of protesting this decision, and that these actions and activities could endanger public order and security and potentially incite social conflict. 

Considering that the aforementioned actions and activities could also take place in our province, which could disrupt public order and security and make it difficult to ensure the safety of life and property, the inviolability of the person, the security of assets, and public welfare, all types of actions such as gatherings, marches, vigils, press statements, hunger strikes, sit-ins, rallies, setting up stands, erecting tents, distributing leaflets and brochures, and hanging posters and banners in open areas related to the removal of the Hakkari Mayor from office or similar actions and activities that may be carried out using this issue as a pretext, as well as the entry of individuals and vehicles understood to be coming to participate in these actions or using our provincial borders to pass to other provinces, and for our outer districts, the departure of individuals to participate in these actions and their entry into our city center, have been banned for an additional 3 days from 14:15 on June 7 to 14:14 on June 10, 2024, within the provincial and district administrative boundaries, including the Gendarmerie zone, in accordance with Articles 17 and 19 of the Law on Meetings and Demonstrations No. 2911 and Articles 11/A, B, and C of the Provincial Administration Law No. 5442.”
