Barbers and hairdressers will be closed one day a week

The Ministry of Trade, after evaluating the requests and suggestions submitted by industry stakeholders, has decided that barbers, hairdressers, and beauty salons will be closed one day a week nationwide.

The regulation went into effect as of July 1, and it was announced that administrative sanctions would be imposed on businesses found not to be closed on the days determined by the governor's offices.

Commenting on the matter, Istanbul Chamber of Barbers President Şükrü Akyüz stated that barbers in Istanbul will be closed on Sundays.

Akyüz noted that the decision is pleasing for barbers, stating, "Actually, such a practice already existed, but with the Ministry's sensitive approach to the issue, this situation has been placed on a legal footing. As a result of the survey we conducted among our tradespeople, 93 percent of our barbers wanted the weekly holiday to be on Sunday."

Pointing out that with this regulation, barbers will now be able to be more refreshed by resting for one day, Akyüz made the following assessment:

"Our tradespeople were unable to spare time for their spouses and children, so they were expecting such a regulation. The Governor's Office had previously made a decision on this matter. They also decided, in line with our request, that barbers should be closed on Sundays. From the moment the official letter reaches us, barbers in Istanbul will now be closed on Sundays."

"UNFAIR COMPETITION HAS BEEN ELIMINATED"

Ankara Chamber of Barbers Tradesmen and Craftsmen President Sezayi Kara also announced that barbers in the city will no longer work on Sundays, saying, "As barbers, we were expecting this decision. In fact, most barbers were closing on Sundays, but when not everyone followed this rule, those who were closing were sometimes forced to open. With the Ministry's regulation, unfair competition has been eliminated."

Kara stated that in their meeting with the Governor's Office, they indicated that it would be appropriate for barbers to be closed on Sundays, and expressed that the barbers are satisfied with the decision.

Stating that barbers will work 6 days a week starting from Monday, Kara said, "Our barbers will work more efficiently as they will now have the opportunity to rest for one day. Our tradespeople were unable to spare time for their families and loved ones. With the regulation, our barbers will now have time for themselves and their loved ones."
