Berkay Gezgin shares the story behind the 'Everything will be very beautiful' slogan

Berkay Gezgin, who was instrumental in the emergence of the "Everything will be very beautiful" (Her şey çok güzel olacak) slogan that became iconic during Ekrem İmamoğlu's 2019 election campaign, described the process he went through, from being detained during the protests to the difficult days he spent in prison.

Stating that the items provided to them were unhygienic and that they had to sleep on the floor, Gezgin said, "It was a difficult process." Emphasizing that being elected to the CHP Party Assembly was a great honor for him, Gezgin stated, "I believe that everything will be beautiful one day, just as my name is Berkay."

"IT WASN'T SOMETHING I HAD PLANNED IN ADVANCE"

Speaking to Sözcü columnist Saygı Öztürk, Berkay Gezgin recounted how the "Everything will be very beautiful" slogan emerged with the following words:

“I ran after the campaign bus to show my love for Mayor Ekrem, to hug him, to be a voice, to say something at the İncirli rally. I couldn't watch the rally in the area; it was crowded. I thought I would run after the bus once it left the rally area and get close to it. I ran after the bus. Because the bus was stopping in the crowd, moving slowly, and Mr. Ekrem was greeting the citizens.

When the bus window opened, I shouted, 'Everything will be very beautiful.' Those words were not something I had planned in advance. They just came out of my mouth at that moment. It was the period when Mayor Ekrem had not yet been given his certificate of election. There was an injustice. As it turned out, everything did indeed become very beautiful after the second election.”

While sharing details about the process he went through after that iconic moment, Gezgin said he was unaware that he was being filmed from inside the bus at the time of the incident. Stating that CHP Chairman Özgür Özel, who visited him while he was in prison, also witnessed those moments, Gezgin noted the following:

“I didn't know they were filming a video from inside the bus while I was shouting. In fact, our chairman Özgür Özel came to visit me while I was in prison, thank you to him. It turns out he was on the bus that day. He told me himself. I had never seen him. He was in the back. He was also very surprised that the event happened this way; he witnessed it live.”

"WE SLEPT ON THE FLOOR, AND THE QUILTS THEY GAVE US WERE DUSTY AND DIRTY"

Berkay Gezgin, who was detained and arrested during the protests in support of İmamoğlu, described those days as follows:

*“There were those who claimed that I was the organizer of the group that insulted the President's mother. That never happened. Because the allegation of the insult was on March 23, whereas I was detained on March 22. I will prove that this is the case.

We had left Saraçhane and were walking towards my home with a friend. There was no march around us. The police called us. We went to them. We were detained. Of course, after health checks and police procedures, I was taken to the courthouse about 60 hours after being held at the Esenler Police Station. The conditions of the detention process were bad. They kept 42 people in the same holding cell. It was a place that would hold 15-20 people at most. We slept on the floor, and the quilts they gave us were dusty and dirty. The food provided was very bad. It was a very difficult process.”*

"I CAN BE THE VOICE OF THE YOUTH"

Sharing his feelings after being elected to the CHP Party Assembly, Gezgin expressed his emotions as follows:

“It was a very beautiful feeling. Now, naturally, there has been a situation where I am seen as someone who can be the voice of the youth in such a process. I was proud and happy that I was elected, and people were proud and happy in the same way. They shared my joy.”
