Body of one crew member recovered from the sunken Kafkametler ship in Zonguldak: Was the ship damaged by a mine?

The General Directorate of Maritime Affairs, under the Republic of Türkiye Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure, shared information on its social media account that the body of one crew member from the Kafkametler ship, which sank in the Black Sea, has been recovered.

BODY OF 1 PERSON RECOVERED

The statement made is as follows:

"The body of one of our seafarers serving on the Kafkametler ship, which ran aground and lost communication, has been found by rescue teams on the Ereğli coast. Search and rescue efforts for our other seafarers on the sunken ship are ongoing. We wish God's mercy upon our seafarer. Our condolences to all."

CREW IDENTIFIED

It was revealed that the crew of the Kafkametler ship consisted of Captain Cemal Turan, 2nd Captain Hıfzı Tarhan, Radio Officer Berke Çamurtaş, Chief Engineer Veli Özel, 2nd Engineer Göksel Özel, Deckhand Tamer Özer, Able Seamen İsmail Kaptan and Satılmış Uslu, Seaman Mustafa Nacar, Able Engineer Cüneyt Aygen, Oiler Ömer Hebip, and Cook Metin Usta.

MINE ALLEGATION

On October 5, it was alleged that the cargo ship Kafkametler had hit a mine near the entrance to the Sulina Channel off the coast of Romania in the Black Sea. According to the allegation, the ship sustained minor damage, but the crew was safe.

DENIAL HAD BEEN ISSUED

The Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure General Directorate of Maritime Affairs denied the allegations in a statement on October 6.

The following statements were included in the statement regarding the matter:

"Following the incident, contact was established with the ship and the operator at our Search and Rescue Coordination Center under the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure General Directorate of Maritime Affairs. The incident in question did not occur on the ship, and no evidence of any mine explosion could be obtained. There is no damage to the ship, and the ship is continuing its voyage to deliver its cargo to the Port of Izmail in Ukraine."
