During Boğaziçi University's 158th graduation ceremony, student Doruk Dörücü, who tore up his own diploma in protest of the cancellation of Ekrem İmamoğlu's diploma, was detained in the morning hours. The prosecutor's office has requested that Dörücü be released under judicial control, but with a travel ban imposed.
The 158th graduation ceremony held at Boğaziçi University was the scene of a notable protest. Graduating student Doruk Dörücü protested the cancellation of the diploma of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Mayor and CHP presidential candidate Ekrem İmamoğlu by tearing up his own diploma on stage.
Taking the floor at the ceremony, Dörücü stated, "This diploma is null and void. I reject the diploma of this despotic regime that cancels the diploma of the future president and opens or closes faculties as it pleases." He further noted that he wanted to receive his diploma not from Rector Naci İnci, who was appointed by President Erdoğan, but from a rector elected by the university itself.
DETAINED IN THE MORNING HOURS
Following the footage that caused a major stir on social media, Doruk Dörücü was detained early in the morning. In his initial statement at the police station, Dörücü defended himself by stating that he did not target any specific person or institution, saying:
"I did not use any expression that discriminates against or demeans any social class, ethnic origin, religion, sect, or any subgroup of the public. I do not accept the accusations brought against me."
PROSECUTOR REQUESTS JUDICIAL CONTROL
After completing his procedures at the police station, Doruk Dörücü was referred to the prosecutor's office. As reported by T24, the prosecutor's office requested that Dörücü be placed under judicial control with a travel ban and sent the file to the Criminal Court of Peace.
