Bornova Mayor Ömer Eşki released: Had been referred for arrest

As part of a "ghost employee" investigation conducted by the İzmir Chief Public Prosecutor's Office into the Bornova Municipality, 4 people, including Mayor Ömer Eşki, were detained.

The police procedures for the 4 individuals were completed, and they were referred to the courthouse. Following his statement at the courthouse, Eşki was referred to the duty magistrate with a request for his arrest.

Bornova Mayor Ömer Eşki and the 3 individuals accompanying him, who were referred to the Duty Criminal Court of Peace with a request for arrest, have been released.

In its statement, the İzmir Chief Public Prosecutor's Office said, "(4) suspects were referred to the Duty Criminal Court of Peace by the İzmir Chief Public Prosecutor's Office with a request for arrest on charges of 'Qualified Fraud (TCK 158 1-e)' and 'Forgery of Official Documents (TCK 204)'."

STATEMENT FROM THE CHIEF PUBLIC PROSECUTOR'S OFFICE

Following the detention decision, a statement from the İzmir Chief Public Prosecutor's Office indicated that it had been determined that suspect A.A. was registered with the Social Security Institution (SGK) as a Call Center Customer Representative as of September 22, 2025, but did not actually perform the duties.

The statement reported that, in line with the prepared SGK Expert Report, it was determined that Ömer Eşki, as well as A.A., who appeared as a call center customer representative at Bornova Municipality, Bornova Municipality Personnel A.Ş. General Directorate Human Resources Manager P.K., and Press, Publication and Public Relations Manager V. İ.A. held responsibility in the incident.

It was reported that detention procedures were applied to those taken into custody on charges of "qualified fraud" and "forgery of official documents."

WHAT HAPPENED?

The İzmir Chief Public Prosecutor's Office had initiated an investigation on April 1, accepting allegations on social media during the investigation process into Uşak Mayor Özkan Yalım as a tip-off, regarding A.A., who was alleged to have received a salary despite not working at the Bornova Municipality, and the municipal officials connected to the matter.
