BREAKING NEWS... Arrest requests for 6 people in Beşiktaş Municipality investigation

As part of an investigation centered on Aziz İhsan Aktaş by the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office, 12 individuals working at Beşiktaş Municipality were detained in an operation carried out early yesterday morning.

The 12 detained individuals were referred to the courthouse this morning following the completion of their statements at the police station.

Within the scope of the "rigging of tenders" investigation into Beşiktaş Municipality, an arrest was requested for Beşiktaş Deputy Mayor Ali Rıza Yılmaz and 5 others who were among those detained yesterday, while judicial control was requested for the other 6 individuals.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Beşiktaş Mayor Rıza Akpolat was detained early on the morning of January 13 at his family's home in Balıkesir as part of an investigation conducted by the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office and was brought to Istanbul. After a four-day detention period, he was arrested on charges of 'being a member of a criminal organization,' 'rigging of tenders,' and 'unjust enrichment.'

In a statement regarding the operation, the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office alleged that a criminal organization, purportedly led by Aziz İhsan Aktaş, directed tenders by bribing municipalities.

42-year-old Rıza Akpolat was elected Mayor of Beşiktaş by receiving 73 percent of the vote in the March 31, 2019 local elections and 64 percent in the March 31, 2024 elections.
