Breaking News... Deliberations on the 'euthanasia' bill for stray animals postponed: First 3 articles accepted

The Draft Law on Amendments to the Animal Protection Law, consisting of 17 articles and prepared under the instruction of AKP Chairman and President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, was discussed in the TBMM Agriculture, Forestry and Rural Affairs Commission.

DELIBERATIONS LASTED 18 HOURS, FIRST 3 ARTICLES ACCEPTED

The deliberations on the draft law, which provides for the 'euthanasia' of stray animals, lasted approximately 18 hours. The first 3 articles of the proposal were accepted with the votes of AKP and MHP deputies.

The articles accepted in the commission are as follows:

"ARTICLE 1- The phrase "provided that human, animal and environmental health are taken into account" has been added after the phrase "The purpose of the Law;" in the first paragraph of Article 1 of the Animal Protection Law No. 5199 dated 24/6/2004.

ARTICLE 2- Clauses (f) and (j) of the first paragraph of Article 3 of Law No. 5199 have been amended as follows, and the phrase "and where animals will be rehabilitated" in clause (k) has been changed to ", where animals are housed and rehabilitated until they are adopted."

"f) Stray animal: Domestic animals other than owned animals,

j) Owned animal: Pets that are adopted by a person, organization, institution or legal entity, whose care, vaccinations, and periodic health checks are performed and which are registered in the Ministry database,",

ARTICLE 3- Clause (b) of the first paragraph of Article 4 of Law No. 5199 has been repealed, and the phrase "caring for or looking after animals" in clause (d) has been changed to "adopting animals", and the phrase "and the protection of disabled animals" in clause (j) has been changed to "caring for animals until they are adopted.""

PROTEST AGAINST AKP'S KIRIŞCI

Commission Chairman and AKP Kahramanmaraş Deputy Vahit Kirişci's continuation of the deliberations for approximately 18 hours with almost no breaks drew the reaction of opposition party deputies. Stating that they were working under unhealthy conditions, opposition deputies protested Chairman Kirişci by banging on the tables.
