Breaking News... Historian İlber Ortaylı has passed away

Renowned historian İlber Ortaylı had been receiving treatment for health issues he had been experiencing for a long period.

Sad news arrived this morning regarding Ortaylı, who was admitted to intensive care and intubated yesterday evening. He lost his battle for life at the hospital where he was being treated.

WHO IS İLBER ORTAYLI?

He was born in 1947 in Bregenz, Austria, and immigrated to Turkey with his family when he was two years old.

He graduated from the Department of History at Ankara University's Faculty of Languages, History and Geography, and subsequently went to the University of Vienna to complete his master's degree in Slavic and Eastern European languages. In 1974, he completed his doctorate at Ankara University with his thesis titled "Local Administrations After the Tanzimat." He became an associate professor in 1979 and a professor in 1989.

He taught at numerous universities, most notably Galatasaray University and Bilkent University.

He served as the Director of the Topkapı Palace Museum between 2005 and 2012, and worked as a consultant to the Ministry of Culture and Tourism in 2018.

Ortaylı was also a regular guest on various television and YouTube channels.
