Following a 3.9 magnitude earthquake off the coast of Silivri, a new 6.2 magnitude tremor occurred. The earthquake, which lasted approximately 10 seconds and was felt in surrounding provinces, caused widespread panic. A further 4.9 magnitude earthquake was recorded in Büyükçekmece. BREAKING NEWS... Istanbul shaken by 6.2 magnitude earthquake: First message from Erdoğan!

Earthquakes occurring in succession off the coast of Silivri, Istanbul today have caused great anxiety both in the city and in surrounding provinces. The Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) announced that a 3.9 magnitude earthquake occurred in the Sea of Marmara, off the coast of Silivri, at approximately 11:32.

According to AFAD data, the first tremor was recorded at a depth of 6.99 kilometers. However, it was the second, larger earthquake that occurred around noon that caused the primary panic.

6.2 MAGNITUDE EARTHQUAKE CAUSES PANIC

At 12:49, another earthquake, this time with a magnitude of 6.2, occurred again off the coast of Silivri. The depth of the earthquake was measured at 6.92 kilometers. The intense tremor, which lasted about 10 seconds, was clearly felt throughout Istanbul and in surrounding provinces such as Bursa, Tekirdağ, Kocaeli, and Sakarya.

As citizens rushed to the streets in panic, there was a brief period of congestion on telephone lines. In some areas, citizens were seen being directed to safe zones.

AFTERSHOCKS CONTINUE: 4.9 MAGNITUDE EARTHQUAKE IN BÜYÜKÇEKMECE

Aftershocks continue following the main earthquake. AFAD announced that another 4.9 magnitude earthquake occurred off the coast of Büyükçekmece at approximately 13:15. It was reported that this tremor also took place at a depth of 7 kilometers.

Meanwhile, another aftershock with a magnitude of 4.4 was also recorded.

ERDOĞAN: WE ARE MONITORING THE DEVELOPMENTS

President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan made a brief statement regarding the developments. Erdoğan stated, "Our relevant institutions are closely monitoring the process. I wish our nation a speedy recovery."

MINISTER URALOĞLU: NO NEGATIVE IMPACTS REPORTED

Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Abdulkadir Uraloğlu also reported that no damage to infrastructure had been detected as a result of initial inspections. Minister Uraloğlu said, "No damage has been encountered on our highways, airports, metro, or train lines. Our teams are continuing their work in the field."
