Lawyer Rezan Epözdemir has been arrested on charges of "bribery," while the request for a travel ban regarding terrorism charges was rejected.
The Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office announced in a statement on Sunday morning that Rezan Epözdemir was detained at 05:45 on charges of "bribery," "aiding the FETÖ/PDY armed terrorist organization," and "political and military espionage." The statement also noted that simultaneous searches were conducted at Epözdemir's home and workplace.
Held in custody for four days, Epözdemir was transferred to the Istanbul Courthouse in Çağlayan yesterday afternoon. It was stated that the lawyer, who did not provide a statement to the police, began his interrogation by the prosecutor's office around 17:00, but his phone could not be technically unlocked.
ARREST DECISION ON BRIBERY CHARGES
Following the completion of the prosecutor's proceedings after midnight, Epözdemir was brought before a judge with a request for his arrest on charges of "mediating bribery." The prosecutor's office also requested that a travel ban be imposed within the scope of the "aiding an armed terrorist organization" and "political and military espionage" charges.
K.Y., the clerk who served as the registry manager at the Bakırköy Courthouse and was detained in the bribery investigation alongside the prosecutor of the period, C.Ç., was released under effective remorse provisions. Following the interrogation, which concluded at 04:00 in the morning, the judge decided to arrest Epözdemir on the charge of bribery. The request for a travel ban regarding the terrorism charges was rejected.
