Former Diyarbakır Metropolitan Municipality Co-Mayor Adnan Selçuk Mızraklı has been released from the Edirne F-Type High-Security Prison after approximately 7 years.
Mızraklı was met at the prison exit by his wife, Zeynep Mızraklı. DEM Party officials and members of parliament were also present in front of the prison during his release.
The news that Mızraklı would be released today was announced by former HDP Co-Chair Selahattin Demirtaş, who is held in the same prison in Edirne. It is noted that Mızraklı and Demirtaş shared the same cell for approximately 4.5 years.
Mızraklı, who was elected Mayor of Diyarbakır Metropolitan Municipality from the HDP in the March 31, 2019 local elections, was removed from office on August 19, 2019, along with the metropolitan mayors of Van and Mardin.
Arrested in October 2019, Mızraklı was sentenced to 9 years, 4 months, and 15 days in prison on March 9, 2020, on charges of "membership in an armed terrorist organization." In February 2022, he was transferred at his own request from the Kayseri Bünyan No. 2 T-Type Prison to the Edirne F-Type High-Security Prison.
