Reacting to the terrorist organization's targeting of the Treaty of Lausanne, ABB Mayor Yavaş said, "The Treaty of Lausanne is the title deed of a homeland won under the leadership of Gazi Mustafa Kemal Atatürk; it is the guarantee of living together on these lands. Under no circumstances and under no conditions can this reality be made a subject of debate."

The full text of Yavaş's statement is as follows:

"As a result of the determined struggle that our country, led by our Turkish Armed Forces, has been carrying out uninterruptedly for years, the terrorist organization PKK has decided to lay down its arms and dissolve the organization.

It is not possible for us to oppose the current situation, which we evaluate as a result of our country's policies that give no quarter to terror and terrorist organizations.

Of course, a Turkey without terror is the longing and goal of us all. However, no initiative that would disturb or upset the citizens of the Republic of Turkey, or bring the Republic of Turkey to a point of bargaining with members of a terrorist organization, can be or should be permitted.

It should not be forgotten that we reached this point with the thousands of martyrs we have given. We cannot upset their spirits or their families entrusted to us under any circumstances…

The State of the Republic of Turkey must conduct the process with transparency, adhering to the law and our constitutional order. The sole address for this process is the Grand National Assembly of Turkey. Authority, oversight, and will must be shaped only under this roof where the nation is represented. If necessary, the public should be allowed to decide by resorting to a referendum for any regulations to be made.
