Brown bears descend on gardens and coops in Sarıkamış
Brown bears that have descended into the Sarıkamış district of Kars have begun entering residential gardens and poultry coops in addition to rummaging through trash containers. Muhittin Uzunay, a resident of the İnönü neighborhood, stated that the bears have killed his chickens and ducks in recent days and demanded that authorities take precautions. Neighborhood residents are living in fear due to the bears coming down into the streets.
After dark, the bears descend into the district and search for food in trash containers. In recent days, the brown bears have also begun entering citizens' gardens and coops.
Muhittin Uzunay, who lives in the İnönü neighborhood, said that the bears are now even entering the gardens of houses.
Stating that they have been seeing brown bears in the neighborhood frequently in recent days, Uzunay said:
"They used to come to the trash containers, but for the last two or three days, they have been entering the garden. There was cheese in the woodshed; they took the cheese. It is a very powerful animal, and this time it has started targeting the coop. Tonight, it killed and ate 10 chickens and 3 ducks from my coop. Our neighborhood is right at the edge of the forest; as soon as darkness falls in the evening, the bears start coming down to the street. We are afraid to go out on the street."
Uzunay requested that authorities take measures regarding the issue.
