Burqa ban officially enters into force in Switzerland
The Swiss Parliament has passed the bill banning the wearing of the burqa. With the new regulation, wearing garments that completely cover the face is prohibited in areas accessible to everyone, such as streets, public transport, public offices, restaurants, and shops. Those who wear head coverings that conceal the face will be subject to fines.
The 'Burqa Ban,' which prohibits the wearing of garments that completely cover the face in public spaces in Switzerland, entered into force as of January 1, 2025. Those who wear garments that cover the face in areas accessible to everyone, such as streets, public transport, public offices, restaurants, and shops, will be subject to fines.
Places of religious worship and sacred sites are excluded from the ban. Face coverings for health, safety, weather conditions, traditional events, and advertising purposes are also among the exceptions.
The government stated that the regulation aims to increase public safety and ensure social cohesion.
The law, which was accepted with 51.2 percent of the vote in a 2021 referendum, has caused controversy in the country.
Fines of up to 1,000 Swiss francs (approximately 1,100 dollars) are stipulated for those who do not comply with the law.
