Bus attendant who prevented accident with brave move speaks out
A bus attendant who saw the driver of an intercity passenger bus traveling from Antalya to Ankara faint behind the wheel intervened to stop the vehicle, preventing a major disaster. The young attendant, who made a split-second decision to take the wheel, recounted those moments.
In an incident that occurred recently, the driver of an intercity passenger bus with license plate 06 EHP 14, belonging to a private company operating the Antalya-Ankara route, Hasan A., fell ill behind the wheel around 05:00 in the morning as they were leaving the Polatlı district of Ankara.
Seeing that the driver of the bus full of passengers had fainted, attendant Ozan Ceylan made a brave decision, immediately jumping to the steering wheel to prevent the vehicle from losing control.
Ceylan turned on the hazard lights, slowed the bus down, and pulled it over to the side of the road. At that moment, a bus from another company coming from behind stopped to help, thinking something was wrong.
DRIVER FAINTED
The first intervention was performed by a passenger on the bus behind, who was a doctor. After the incident, where passengers experienced great panic and a disaster was averted thanks to the attendant's sudden reflex, the bus continued its journey with a relief driver. Ozan Ceylan, the bus attendant who earned the appreciation of the passengers with his quick decision and brave action, described those moments of panic and fear. Stating that the driver's blood pressure dropped behind the wheel and he fainted, Ceylan said, "It happened a few days ago on our Antalya-Ankara trip, around 05:00 in the morning after we passed Polatlı. Our captain at the wheel had a drop in blood pressure. His vision blurred, and he had a brief fainting spell."
Stating that the passengers experienced great panic when they saw the bus driver faint, but that he maintained his composure and took control of the steering wheel, Ceylan said, "When he fainted, the passengers suddenly panicked and started screaming. I was sitting in the host seat; as soon as I noticed the situation, I immediately jumped to the steering wheel. I started to take control of the vehicle by holding the steering wheel while standing. The vehicle's speed was around 110, I turned on the hazard lights and started to press the brake. When I turned on the hazard lights and pulled over to the side of the road, vehicles from another company stopped to help. Since the passengers were constantly screaming and standing up, we were a bit panicked too, but we still maintained our composure. After we stopped, one of the passengers on the bus that stopped turned out to be a doctor. He provided first aid and intervened. We brought him around and put our captain in the sleeper berth. We completed our trip by continuing with our relief captain. Our captain's health is currently very good, he is on leave. He will start working again when his leave ends."
