Ceasefire move from Hamas leader Sinwar: Proposal conveyed to Israel
An Israeli source stated that mediators from Egypt and Qatar have informed Israeli officials that Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar is seeking a ceasefire agreement to end the conflict in Gaza. However, it is not yet clear how Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will respond to this ceasefire proposal.
As Israel's attacks on the Gaza Strip continue for the 310th day, efforts for a ceasefire agreement that includes the release of Israeli hostages are ongoing.
An unnamed Israeli source revealed that Egyptian and Qatari mediators have informed Israeli officials that Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar wants a ceasefire agreement that would end the war in the Gaza Strip. Regarding Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu, the source stated, "No one knows what Netanyahu wants," and noted that U.S. officials have told Israeli officials that an agreement must be reached immediately to avoid a regional war.
Israeli sources indicated that if a ceasefire agreement is reached, Netanyahu could call for elections, which would allow him to control the timing of the elections.
U.S. President Joe Biden, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, and Emir of Qatar Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani called on Israel and Hamas to resume negotiations on August 15 in Doha, Qatar, or Cairo, Egypt, and urged for the implementation of a ceasefire agreement without further delay. A statement from the office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu noted that Israel would send a delegation to participate in the talks next week to "finalize the details" and implement the framework agreement.
