Cem Küçük's statement on military service duration and amnesty: It might decrease
Cem Küçük made notable remarks regarding the process of the terrorist organization PKK laying down its arms. Stating that the process could lead to fundamental changes not only in security but also in Turkey's defense policies, Küçük said there could be changes to military service durations.
While the images of the terrorist organization PKK burning weapons have resonated widely in the world press, Cem Küçük made evaluations regarding the ongoing process on Ekol TV.
WILL MILITARY SERVICE DURATION DECREASE?
Stating that "if the PKK completely lays down its arms, a significant transformation could occur in defense spending," Cem Küçük expressed that the path could be cleared for allocating more resources to R&D and the defense industry. Noting that the transition to a professional army could accelerate, Küçük said, "Perhaps the military service duration could drop from 6 months to 1-2 months."
"LAYING DOWN ARMS MEANS A CHANGE IN PSYCHOLOGY"
Reminding that the PKK has been a terrorist organization for 47 years, Küçük stated that the organization had grown stronger over this period. For this reason, he expressed that not only the physical situation but also the social psychology needs to transform.
WILL THERE BE A GENERAL AMNESTY?
Evaluating the 'general amnesty' that has come to the agenda following the laying down of arms, Küçük said, "If the PKK is laying down its arms, it is a reality of life; an amnesty must be enacted. I think an amnesty will be issued."
