Cemil Tugay's call to the ministry regarding 'Izmir Bay': 'It might be a bother, but...'

Tugay said, "We will do everything we can with the power of our municipality. We also believe we will get good results. We will all see together whether the ministry will just watch, do performative work, or actually participate. I mean, if they don't do it, all of Izmir, all of Turkey, and even the whole world will know. This is a city they are obligated to serve. It might be a bother, but they should intervene in Izmir Bay. They should also provide their contributions.

This pollution is not a situation of 5-10 or 15-20 years. It is a situation that has occurred at the end of a process of at least 60-70 years. Therefore, they cannot say 'This is not our job' by blaming a certain period or certain people. They have no right to do such a thing. This is not an ethical behavior. We will share these with the public," he said.

"THERE ARE NO CONCRETE STEPS TAKEN"

Answering the question of whether a protocol has been made with the ministry for the cleaning of the bay, Tugay stated, "There is no protocol with the ministry anyway. We want the ministry to do its job, and we want to do our own job. They asked me to sign the report prepared as the Scientific Committee, I signed that report but I also stated my reservations.

In other words, there are no concrete steps taken by the ministry so far. We are walking on our own path. The 4th phase of the Çiğli Wastewater Treatment Plant is being built rapidly.

We will have consecutive tenders these days for rainwater separation. Apart from that, our colleagues are also preparing to do some dredging in the Bay," he explained.
