Cengiz Holding's Cerattepe EIA report to be discussed at the ministry

The Review and Evaluation Commission will hold a meeting at the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change on Wednesday, January 8, 2025, at 10:00 AM regarding the positive Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) report announced for the copper mine that Eti Bakır, owned by Mehmet Cengiz, wants to open in Artvin's Cerattepe. According to a report in Birgün, Yeşil Artvin Association President Nur Neşe Karahan, who called on all residents of Artvin, chambers, and NGOs, stated, "After every legal victory we win in Cerattepe, the 'shameless Cengiz Holding' appears before us again and quickly with another EIA project!" and noted that even the Constitutional Court had found the people of Artvin to be in the right regarding Cerattepe and halted mining activities.

Karahan used the following expressions:

"As required by legislation, following the Public Information meeting held on October 3, 2024, a 'Review and Evaluation Commission' (İDK) meeting will now be held in Ankara regarding the project they have prepared again. In this context, we invite all residents of Artvin, chambers, and environmental associations to the İDK meeting to be held on January 8, 2025."

WHAT HAD HAPPENED?

The "EIA positive" decision previously granted for the copper mine project that Cengiz Holding's Eti Bakır wants to open in Artvin's Cerattepe was canceled by the Rize Administrative Court on July 11 as a result of a lawsuit filed by local residents. Following the decision, the Artvin Governorship halted the company's activities on August 24. However, Cengiz Holding reapplied to the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change, and a Public Information meeting was held on October 3, 2024.
