Cerattepe warning from Artvin Governor's Office to Cengiz Holding: Court ruling recalled

The Artvin Governor's Office has issued a warning to Cengiz Holding following the court's cancellation of the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) positive decision for the Cerattepe Copper Mine facility.

Cerattepe warning from Artvin Governor's Office to Cengiz Holding: Court ruling recalled

The Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) positive decision regarding the Cerattepe Copper Mine facility, operated by Cengiz Holding, which is known for its proximity to the AKP government, has been cancelled by the Rize Administrative Court.

Following the court's decision, the Artvin Governor's Office issued a statement.

The statement, which recalled that the 'EIA positive decision has been cancelled,' noted that legal proceedings would be initiated if the decision is not complied with.

The statement from the Artvin Governor's Office included the following remarks:

"Regarding the EIA Positive Decision for the 'Cerattepe Copper Mine, Crushing and Screening Plant, and Cable Car Line' project, which is being operated by Eti Bakır Cerattepe Enterprise in the Cerattepe locality of Taşlıca Village, Artvin Province, a cancellation decision was issued by the Rize Administrative Court on 11.07.2024 with decision number E.2024/443 and K.2024/570.

In accordance with the decision conveyed to the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change, it was notified to the project owner enterprise via the Artvin Governor's Office letter dated 20.08.2024 and numbered 10237603 that the cancellation decision issued by the Rize Administrative Court must be complied with, that no production-oriented activities should be carried out in the project area or within the scope of the project, and that otherwise, legal proceedings would be initiated. During the on-site inspection conducted on 21.08.2024, it was determined that there were no production-oriented activities, and the current situation was recorded in a signed report.

Furthermore, Non-Governmental Organizations that requested information regarding the suspension of the mining activity in question were also informed that the activity had been suspended via a letter dated 21.08.2024 and numbered 10272019."
