CHP Chair Özel shares post on 'Ethem Sarısülük'

I respectfully commemorate #EthemSarısülük on the anniversary of his death, who was shot in the heart of Ankara while exercising his right to democratic protest. We will not let this murder be forgotten so that the sentences given satisfy the conscience and those responsible are held accountable!

WHAT HAD HAPPENED?

During a protest held in Ankara to support the Gezi resistance, OSTİM worker Sarısülük was shot in the head by police fire on June 1, 2013. He was taken to Ankara Numune Training and Research Hospital in critical condition. He lost his life on June 14.

It was proven by a ballistic report that the weapon that shot Sarısülük belonged to police officer Ahmet Şahbaz. The Ankara 13th Criminal Court of Peace decided that Şahbaz should be tried without arrest, citing the "possibility of it remaining within the limits of legitimate self-defense."

The case concluded on September 3, 2014. The court panel applied reductions for unjust provocation, "good conduct," and discretionary mitigation. The sentence given to Şahbaz became 7 years, 9 months, and 10 days with these reductions.

The Supreme Court of Appeals Chief Public Prosecutor's Office found the sentence insufficient and requested that Şahbaz be sentenced for intentional killing. The Supreme Court of Appeals overturned the decision on procedural grounds.

In the retrial, the Aksaray High Criminal Court announced its decision on December 19, 2016, and Şahbaz was sentenced to 1 year, 4 months, and 20 days in prison. The prison sentence was converted into a judicial fine of 10 thousand 100 liras.
