CHP Group Deputy Chairman Ali Mahir Başarır recalled the case of Pastor Brunson while reacting to the arrest of students on the grounds of protests in support of İmamoğlu.
Targeting the letter in which the Council of Higher Education (YÖK) ordered investigations into students and academics who participated in the protests, Başarır stated the following:
"Pastor Brunson is in his homeland, our children are in prison! 296 young people, who had nothing in their hands but their transit cards and were merely showing their democratic reaction, cannot go to school or take their exams! The YÖK President has come out and said, 'Expel them from school.' If there is anyone who should be expelled, it is you!"
