CHP Deputy Chair Bakan brings the expulsion of a martyr's child from a KYK dormitory for sharing an opinion on WhatsApp to Parliament
CHP Deputy Chair Murat Bakan has brought the issue of a martyr's child being expelled from a KYK dormitory for sharing his thoughts on WhatsApp to the agenda of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey (TBMM).
It has been reported that Görkem Akşit, a 3rd-year English Language Teaching student at Hatay Mustafa Kemal University, was reported and subsequently expelled from the male student dormitory affiliated with the Credit and Dormitories Institution (KYK) where he was staying, after writing in a WhatsApp group containing students: “Friends, while our university friends across the country are resisting the injustices being committed, sitting here like this touches my conscience.”
CHP Deputy Chair and İzmir MP Murat Bakan has brought the matter to the agenda of the TBMM. Bakan submitted a written parliamentary question to be answered by the Minister of Youth and Sports, Osman Aşkın Bak.
Bakan, who examined the grounds for the expulsion of Görkem Akşit, a martyr's child, from the KYK dormitory, whether there were political motives behind this decision, and the legal basis for the cancellation of his dormitory rights, also questioned allegations that KYK Dormitory Manager Murat Artar had previously worked as a security guard and was appointed as a dormitory manager in a short period of time.
‘THE SAME POLITICS THAT CREATES AN INFORMER OUT OF A UNIVERSITY STUDENT AND ORGANIZES THIS MALICE IS THE SAME POLITICS THAT HAS BROUGHT OUR COUNTRY TO THIS DEADLOCK AND DIFFICULT STATE’
CHP Deputy Chair Murat Bakan stated, "A martyr's child is studying at a university in the earthquake zone, shares the discomfort he feels as a citizen regarding the injustices and lawlessness in his country with his friends, and is expelled from a state dormitory. On one side, hundreds of thousands of students with different thoughts meet on the common values upon which humanity is built and raise that righteous voice together; on the other side, some students who share the same dormitory, the same room, and the same desk can cause their friend to be left on the street just because they hold a different opinion. The same politics that creates an informer out of a university student, organizes this malice, and has brought our country to this deadlock and difficult state is the same. We have to change this all together. Either all of us or none of us," he said.
Bakan directed the following questions to the Minister of Youth and Sports, Osman Aşkın Bak:
"1- What is the reason for the expulsion of Mustafa Kemal University student Görkem Akşit from the KYK dormitory? Has it been investigated whether there were any political motives in making this decision?
2- How is the expulsion of a child of a martyr who sacrificed his life for his homeland from a student dormitory due to a post he made explained? What steps will your Ministry take regarding the matter?
3- Are the allegations that KYK Dormitory Manager Murat Artar previously worked as a security guard and was appointed as a dormitory manager in a short time true? If true, based on what criteria was he appointed to this position?
4- Was a procedure in accordance with KYK regulations and relevant legislation followed during the process of canceling Görkem Akşit's dormitory rights?
5- Is any inspection mechanism being operated to protect the housing rights of students staying in student dormitories in Hatay?
6- What are the concrete steps taken by your Ministry to solve the housing problem of students in the earthquake zone?"
