CHP member Şenol joins those seeking 'effective remorse': Testified twice
It has emerged that Umut Şenol, a CHP Şişli Municipal Council member and businessman who was arrested in the first wave of operations within the scope of ongoing investigations into the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (İBB), has requested to benefit from 'effective remorse' provisions from the prosecutor's office. It is understood that Şenol provided testimony twice last week to the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office, which is conducting the investigation.
According to the report in T24, the "release request" for Şenol, who is also a former Beşiktaş executive and was detained and arrested in the same operation as current İBB Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu in the İBB case, was evaluated by the Istanbul 12th Criminal Court of Peace.
The court's prepared decision record included the defenses of the suspects. Businessman and CHP Şişli Municipal Council member Umut Şenol, who is detained within the scope of the file and is currently held in Bandırma Prison, explained in his statement that he had provided additional testimony to the prosecutor's office last week.
In his statement, where he indicated that he had conveyed his request to benefit from effective remorse to the prosecutor's office, Şenol said, "I gave additional testimony to the prosecutor's office last week and stated that I wanted to benefit from the provisions of effective remorse.
It is claimed that the company, in which I was a 20 percent partner and had no signature authority, submitted a bid for the tender that led to my arrest. I was an İBB Council member at that time; technically, I could not have participated in the tender, and even if I had, it would have been canceled," he said.
RELEASE REQUESTS EVALUATED
Güldem Şık, one of the suspects in the file whose release requests were evaluated by the court and who is also an İBB bureaucrat, said the following while requesting release from the court:
"I was arrested on the 24th. While I was being held in Silivri, I was sent to Sakarya for no reason. I am staying in a common area; hygiene conditions are not sufficient. Sores have started to appear all over my body. I am kilometers away from my family; there is no suspicion of me fleeing. I surrendered myself; I request a release decision, even if it is with judicial control conditions."
The court evaluated the release requests of 11 suspects, including the detained İBB Mayor İmamoğlu and businessman Şenol. The court decided to continue the detention of all the suspects.
