CHP Ankara MP Okan Konuralp took the floor at the Grand National Assembly of Turkey (TBMM). Speaking about the algorithm change implemented by Google and the closure of Gazete Duvar, Konuralp said, "I call on everyone to access news not through Google, but by directly visiting the websites they read, and to break this secret embargo."
Making a further call, Konuralp stated that a digital copyright law must be enacted quickly.
Konuralp said the following:
“Gazete Duvar, one of the shining examples of journalism, has decided to suspend its publication for deep-seated reasons, with Google's algorithm change coming to the fore. The fact that Gazete Duvar was forced to make this decision is a result of Google's interference with the right to access information, because Google's algorithm change is an overt embargo against the truth. Moreover, the Google crisis experienced by independent media is a crisis for all citizens who want to access news freely. Against this embargo, we must immediately enact a digital copyright law that is democratic, compatible with the universal principles of press freedom, prioritizes independent and impartial media, and is prepared with the contributions of professional organizations; and I call on everyone to access news not through Google, but by directly visiting the websites they read, and to break this secret embargo.”
