CHP MP Sezgin Tanrıkulu, who is monitoring the situation of 54 university students transferred from the Vatan Police Headquarters to the Çağlayan Courthouse, made a statement. Addressing Minister of Justice Yılmaz Tunç, Tanrıkulu said, "Saying 'there is no torture' does not make it disappear."
Tanrıkulu, who is following the situation of the 54 young people transferred from the Vatan Police Headquarters to the Çağlayan Courthouse, made the following statement:
“43 of them have been referred to the Criminal Judgeship of Peace with a request for arrest, and there is a request for judicial control regarding 11 of them. I spoke with their lawyers; there are reports, and I will share them in the attachment as well. There are many reports, but I will share five striking ones. They were subjected to systematic torture and ill-treatment while being taken into custody.
There is a young person with a broken nose, there are young people with ecchymosis in many parts of their bodies, and furthermore, they were constantly subjected to swearing and insults by a team while in custody.
I want to address the Minister of Justice, who says 'there is no torture,' from here once again: Unfortunately, saying it does not exist does not make it disappear. Those detained in Saraçhane were subjected to systematic ill-treatment and torture. I am making this claim. Your duty is not to say 'it does not exist,' but to give instructions for these allegations to be investigated. You did not do this and you rejected it. This denial of yours gives courage to the security personnel involved in the crime of torture and ill-treatment.”
