CHP's Tanrıkulu reacts to court's Demirtaş ruling as a 'dangerous game': It cannot be a coincidence

CHP Diyarbakır MP Sezgin Tanrıkulu has reacted to the opinion requesting punishment issued by the Mersin Chief Public Prosecutor's Office regarding former HDP Co-Chair Selahattin Demirtaş. 

Tanrıkulu made the following statements in a post on his social media account:

"Selahattin Demirtaş has been in prison for 9 years. All investigations against Demirtaş were consolidated in Ankara and turned into a single case, but the investigations in Bakırköy and Mersin were kept separate from this.

Thus, 'reserve cases' were created to be used against Demirtaş, with the thought that they might be needed later. Despite the ECHR rulings in his favor that have still not been implemented by Turkey, and while Demirtaş's release is on the agenda, we believe the Mersin Public Prosecutor's opinion requesting punishment cannot be a coincidence.

Likewise, it is out of the question for the judiciary to be unaware of the ongoing process and potential regulations.

Therefore, the opinion in question in Mersin, in terms of its timing, represents an attempt to place a new barrier in front of Demirtaş's release and expresses the judiciary's resistance to the peace process.

This is a dangerous game. I hope this game will be abandoned."
