CHP's Özgür Çelik reacts sharply to AKP-appointed Esenyurt trustee: 'We are embarrassed on behalf of the AKP for this absurdity'

CHP's Özgür Çelik reacts sharply to AKP-appointed Esenyurt trustee: 'We are embarrassed on behalf of the AKP for this absurdity'

The appointment of Can Aksoy as a trustee in October 2024, following the arrest of Ahmet Özer, had sparked intense public criticism.

Recently, the hanging of posters by the trustee administration targeting the Istanbul Water and Sewerage Administration (İSKİ) in various parts of the district has reignited the debate.

While these posters caused a wide stir on social media and drew reactions from many quarters, the agenda had not yet cooled when posters reading "Where is the Esenyurt Metro?", also unsigned, were seen in the district.

Can Aksoy, who was appointed as the trustee to Esenyurt, also made the following post on his social media account regarding the metro posters in question:

"Why are we asking about the Esenyurt Metro: In public opinion polls in Esenyurt, transportation and traffic problems come first with 42%. The most important cause of traffic is the lack of rail transport.

In Esenyurt, where the working population is dense, traffic locks up during commuting hours; the only solution to the traffic problem that most affects the lives of Esenyurt residents is the metro. That is why we are asking: Where is the Esenyurt Metro?"

RESPONSE TO THE TRUSTEE FROM CHP ISTANBUL PROVINCIAL CHAIR ÖZGÜR ÇELİK

In a statement made via his social media account, Özgür Çelik shared Can Aksoy's post and reacted as follows:

"The trustee, who ignores the law by engaging in politics despite being a civil servant in Esenyurt, is running a campaign with public money to discredit the IMM (Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality).

An appointed official who has only been in Istanbul for 3 years and wouldn't be able to name the neighborhoods of Esenyurt if asked, is playing at being a politician without recognizing state traditions.

I suppose not a single successful politician has emerged within the AKP district presidency, so they are preparing this appointed bureaucrat for the Esenyurt Mayoralty. We are embarrassed on behalf of the AKP for this absurdity.

Since the day the IMM administration passed to our party in 2019, Istanbul's major infrastructure projects have been removed from government investment programs. The people of Istanbul are being punished. Erdoğan has for years refused to approve the Sefaköy-Beylikdüzü metro, which would significantly relieve traffic in Esenyurt and the 3rd District, and for which the financing and project are ready.

We are the city that builds the most metro lines in the world by providing our own financing. We are proud of this.

Under the leadership of Ekrem İmamoğlu, we are completing our lines that have been awaited, expected, and needed for years.

We will work with all our might under all circumstances.

We will surround both Esenyurt and every corner of Istanbul with metros.

I reiterate my advice to this amateur politician in the guise of a trustee: Resign from your civil service, register with the AKP, and fight bravely in the political arena.

I also suggest that the AKP officials who have served their own party for years and engage in local politics on the streets of Esenyurt should stop showing this disrespect to themselves and their voters."
