CHP reacts to Parliament Speaker Kurtulmuş's 'unconstitutional attempt' comment: If he is interested, he should implement the Atalay ruling

CHP Deputy Chairperson Gökçe Gökçen responded to Numan Kurtulmuş, who described the CHP's stance following the brawl in Parliament as "unconstitutional," by saying, "If he is interested in the Constitution, he should first implement the Constitutional Court's ruling regarding Can Atalay."

Parliament Speaker Numan Kurtulmuş had evaluated the brawl that broke out during the swearing-in ceremony of Minister of Justice Akın Gürlek and Minister of Interior Mustafa Çiftçi in Parliament, describing the CHP's stance as "unconstitutional."

Responding to Kurtulmuş, Gökçe Gökçen stated the following:

“If Numan Kurtulmuş is interested in the constitution, he can start by implementing the Constitutional Court's ruling regarding Can Atalay.

Can Atalay was elected as a member of parliament by the will of the people of Hatay, who are trying to heal the wounds of the earthquake, and was elected to the Human Rights Investigation Commission with the consensus of all parties, but he has not been able to perform his duties for even a single day due to the suspension of the constitution.

This situation concerns not only the people of Hatay or just the voters, but everyone who has sworn an oath on the constitution, starting with Parliament Speaker Numan Kurtulmuş.

Let us remember that the process of stripping Can Atalay of his parliamentary status has been deemed null and void by a court ruling.

What needs to be done is for the Speaker of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey to restore the status of the Hatay deputy, which is merely an administrative procedure.”
