CHP's response to Bahçeli on TRNC election: Even if he cannot digest this result, we call it the will of the people
The CHP Central Executive Board (MYK) met at the CHP Headquarters under the chairmanship of Chairman Özgür Özel. While the meeting, which began at 14:00, was ongoing, CHP Spokesperson Deniz Yücel held a press conference regarding the MYK agenda. In his statement, Yücel criticized the remarks made by MHP Chairman Bahçeli following the TRNC election.
CHP Spokesperson Deniz Yücel stated, "We advocate that our relations with Cyprus should be maintained not with an attitude that limits them by calling it a 'baby homeland,' but in a friendly, egalitarian manner that includes solidarity and brotherhood, using the term 'brother homeland.'
Even if some politicians, primarily Mr. Devlet Bahçeli, cannot digest this result, we call it the will of the people, democracy, and the power of the nation.
The new President, supported by six out of every ten Turkish Cypriots, is of course legitimate, deserving, and the winner. It falls to us to congratulate him. We wish the new President of the TRNC success. We value and support Tufan Erhürman's statements that 'no foreign policy will be determined without consulting Turkey,'" he said.
Yücel said the following:
Despite all kinds of obstacles and all kinds of moves that would lead to unfair competition in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, Mr. Tufan Erhürman emerged victorious from the election. The Republican Turkish Party, which won the elections, is a sister party to the CHP.
On one hand, to avoid casting a shadow over the impartiality of the elections, and on the other hand, because the Cyprus elections are an internal matter of Cyprus, we as the CHP did not find it appropriate to voice this issue until the elections were over. But the AKP and MHP did so. In fact, a hotel belonging to an MHP deputy was used as a headquarters.
In the words of the Cypriots, they mobilized everyone 'from the footballer to the pop star,' but they could not prevent the national will reflected in the ballot box. We see Cyprus as an independent state.
That is why we do not use the term 'baby homeland.' We advocate that our relations with Cyprus should be maintained not with an attitude that limits them by calling it a 'baby homeland,' but in a friendly, egalitarian manner that includes solidarity and brotherhood, using the term 'brother homeland.'
We value and support Tufan Erhürman's statements that 'no foreign policy will be determined without consulting with Turkey.'
