CHP speaks out from Hatay: Number of schools insufficient, operating rooms not functioning

CHP Party Spokesperson Deniz Yücel visited Hatay, which was affected by the Kahramanmaraş-centered earthquakes on February 6, 2023, and made statements. Drawing attention to the disruptions in healthcare services in Hatay, Yücel said, "62 Family Health Centers, 6 private hospitals, and 3 public hospitals were destroyed. There is a population of approximately 1 million in the districts of Antakya, Defne, Samandağ, Yayladağı, Altınözü, Hassa, and Kumlu. In cases requiring emergency intervention such as heart attacks or strokes, intervention is not possible. And another problem at least as important as this is that intensive care units and operating rooms are not working. Two whole years have passed since the earthquake; which wound have you healed?"

Yücel was accompanied by CHP Hatay deputies Nermin Yıldırım Kara, Mehmet Güzelmansur, Servest Mullaoğlu, and party members at the meeting held at the CHP Hatay Provincial Headquarters.

Emphasizing that they had stated Hatay was a personal matter for them and that they would take special interest in it, and that they had kept this promise, Yücel underlined that they would stand by Hatay and the people of Hatay until the problems are solved.

Yücel said, "At the end of the twenty-two months that have passed since the February 6 earthquakes, there are still very serious problems in Hatay regarding housing, education, health, and transportation. Unfortunately, Hatay has not had its wounds healed and has been abandoned to despair by the government. Hatay has turned into a container city. Today, the number of containers in Hatay is over 74 thousand. Three months before the second anniversary of the earthquake, our citizens, whose number is still higher than the population of nine provinces in Turkey, are unfortunately living in containers in Hatay."

'NUMBER OF SCHOOLS INSUFFICIENT, OPERATING ROOMS NOT FUNCTIONING'

Yücel stated the following:

"In many places, 2-3 schools have been merged, and our children are trying to get an education this way. There are also serious problems regarding healthcare. 62 Family Health Centers, 6 private hospitals, and 3 public hospitals were destroyed. There is a population of approximately 1 million in the districts of Antakya, Defne, Samandağ, Yayladağı, Altınözü, Hassa, and Kumlu. In cases requiring emergency intervention such as heart attacks or strokes, intervention is not possible. And another problem at least as important as this is that intensive care units and operating rooms are not working. I express this with sadness and I am calling out to the Minister of Health from here; public health is facing a serious danger in Hatay, where it is impossible to receive healthcare services. Steps must be taken immediately regarding healthcare services."
