CHP Spokesperson Yücel to the expert witness: Did you get your law degree from a bubblegum wrapper?

CHP Spokesperson Deniz Yücel, speaking at a press conference regarding his party's Central Executive Board (MYK) meeting, addressed the expert witness S.B., who was named by Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu, and asked, "Did you get your law degree from a bubblegum wrapper?"

CHP Spokesperson Yücel to the expert witness: Did you get your law degree from a bubblegum wrapper?

Highlights from Yücel's statements are as follows:

"Schools opened today, and approximately 20 million students across the country started their lessons. We wish all our students and teachers success in the second semester. However, our 36 children who lost their lives in the Bolu Grand Hotel fire, where they had gone for their semester break, could not go to school today. We remind the Minister of Interior, who said 'the identities of those responsible will be clear within 10 days at the latest' on the day this pain was experienced, that today is the 14th day. The responsible parties are still not identified... There are 36 empty desks in schools...

We experienced another pain we cannot forget on February 6, 2023. Two earthquakes occurred that affected 11 of our provinces, and the destruction they caused and the marks they left will not be erased from memories for years. On the 2nd anniversary of the great disaster where we lost thousands of our people and millions of our citizens were left homeless, earthquake survivors are still trying to cope with great difficulties. In the time that has passed since the earthquake, infrastructure problems have not yet been solved in many cities, permanent housing has not been completed, and steps have not been taken to economically and socially revive the cities that were razed to the ground. In Hatay, which was most affected by the earthquake and which the government threatened just before the local elections by saying, 'If the central government and local government are not from the same party, services will not come,' a significant portion of earthquake survivors are still struggling to survive under difficult conditions in container cities.

"FAILED THE TEST"

Unfortunately, the compassionate hand of the state could not reach millions of our citizens who experienced the greatest of pains and lost their children, parents, relatives, and friends; and as in every matter, the AKP government has failed the test in healing the wounds of the Maraş earthquake. In the earthquake zone, where transformers are insufficient and power outages negatively affect life, significant problems continue to be experienced in many public services, from education to health.

"WE WILL RELEGATE THE GOVERNMENT TO THE DUSTY SHELVES OF HISTORY"

During the 23-year AKP government, which views the disasters that have occurred as 'fate' or 'nature,' we have lost millions of our lives in earthquakes, floods, fires, workplace accidents, mine collapses, pandemics, and many other natural disasters. But do you know what hurts us the most? The fact that many of them would not have resulted in death if precautions had been taken. As the famous author and philosopher Albert Camus said, 'If you want to know a country, look at how people die in that country.' The Republic of Turkey has never seen such an incompetent government throughout its history. The AKP government has gone down in history as a government that has caused great pain to the Turkish people through lack of precaution and negligence, and furthermore, as a government that kills millions while they are alive by condemning them to hunger. However, we state here; we will relegate this anti-people government to the dusty shelves of history at the first ballot box.

"ISN'T IT LIKE A JOKE?"

Not a day goes by in this country without an injustice occurring. The national will is being usurped, trustees are being appointed to municipalities, mayors and chairmen of political parties are being arrested, and journalists are being subjected to investigations and thrown into prison just for reporting the news. In such an environment, the AKP recently announced the 2025-2029 Judicial Reform Strategy. Isn't it like a joke? This document, which contains hundreds of targets, is being announced by a government that does not recognize the Constitution and Constitutional Court decisions, distorts the purpose of laws and turns them into a patchwork, does not like the national will and puts a mortgage on it, turns arrest from a measure into a method of punishment, and eliminates the impartial and independent structure of the judiciary. And then they expect this nation to believe that the AKP government will reform the judiciary.

REACTED TO THE ARRESTS

Just in January, while you were announcing this document, our Beşiktaş Mayor and the Chairman of the Victory Party (Zafer Partisi) were arrested... Halk TV Editor-in-Chief Suat Toktaş was arrested, Program Coordinator Kürşad Oğuz and journalists Barış Pehlivan, Seda Selek, and Serhan Asker were detained for 24 hours and released under judicial control measures for fear they might flee. Artist Manager Ayşe Barım was arrested 12 years later on the allegation that she was the organizer of the Gezi protests.

An investigation was launched against our Istanbul Metropolitan Mayor, Mr. Ekrem İmamoğlu, because he announced the illegalities committed by the AKP with documents before the public at a press conference. Turkey did not leave Mr. İmamoğlu, who was elected with the votes of the Istanbul Alliance, and the people of Istanbul alone in the face of the injustice they suffered. In the face of the AKP's illegalities that would make coup periods look mild, tens of thousands who wanted to claim their own will were in front of the courthouse, and millions who could not go there were in front of their screens. There were extraordinary security measures at the Çağlayan Courthouse. We saw that there was a special preparation there to pit the police against the citizens. We saw there, in fact, the fear, anxiety, and panic of a government that is on its way out... All these events are the final death throes of a political party that is nearing the loss of power....

"DID YOU GET YOUR LAW DEGREE FROM A BUBBLEGUM WRAPPER?"

Because Mr. Ekrem İmamoğlu announced the name of the expert witness who was specifically assigned to write a commissioned report against CHP municipalities; they say 'Attempting to influence the expert witness' or 'Targeting a public official!' Oh, this is shameful! People laugh at those who open such an investigation and those who have it opened... They laugh at the one who opens it because they say, 'You don't know the law, my brother.' They ask the person, 'Did you get your law degree from a bubblegum wrapper?' They laugh at the one who has it opened, saying, 'If you are hoping for help from these things, if you are hoping for help from such investigations, you are already finished, my brother.' 'You have already lost your social legitimacy.' There are over 8 thousand expert witnesses in Istanbul. For some reason, the same person is always appointed in the files of Republican People's Party municipalities. Talented... Skillful... Self-proclaimed... Now, are we to believe that this talented, skillful, and self-proclaimed expert witness was 'coincidentally' assigned to the investigation files of CHP municipalities in a way that would invalidate all possibilities, and that this person's reports are in accordance with the law? Is this what you expect?"
